This article presents a review of the state-of-the-art literature in smart solutions for the elderly based on publications under ICT smart solutions for these elderly, along with smart furniture options and manufacturer activities in terms of fixing market prices for these furniture materials. Given the vast influence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 on technological advancement in furniture design, it is imperative to examine information and communication technology (ICT) solutions for the elderly in the context of smart furniture design and implementation. For this reason, the acceptance of smart furniture has soared over the years. Within a ubiquitous environment, home and office furniture can be maximally utilized to provide ease, especially if the items are designed based on smart technology. Besides the diverse options in terms of targeted characteristics a set of added value properties were identified as possible differentiations elements for a new company, entering this market. The paper proposes an analysis, using competitive engineering tools, assessing some of the most important characteristics embedded in a piece of smart furniture proposing several development directions for three totally different market segments with different needs: single young adults, families with children and upper class persons. Nevertheless, the same piece of furniture cannot satisfy, in the same time, each market sector, imposing a clear differentiation among different types of customers.
This affected also the furniture market where the thriving companies oriented their products towards the concept of smart furniture integrating multiple characteristics in a single product. Following the economic crisis, defined by many specialists as a lack of company efficiency, the customer expectations towards a product shifted, any purchase being made after a careful analysis.
